In 2005, South Carolina artist Rebecca Hake-Flickinger began painting after being inspired by several trips to the incredibly beautiful western states of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. Her earliest themes were based on Petroglyph carvings found around the Moab and Capital Reef areas of Utah.  Working in acrylic on canvas, this series of paintings display a soft impressionistic style with predominate warm earth tones and strong yellows. Over the next year, Becky, as she is known, evolved her style and color pallet. Adding in the use of felt markers and brighter colors, her style transformed to a very unique blend of folk, story book and pop art.  Moving to Colorado in 2006, her subject matter also moved on to mountain and mining themes. In 2010 she began to produce more work and started participating in local art shows. Trending toward large format paintings, Becky transitioned her themes into depicting scenes of her childhood and the rural landscapes of Pennsylvania. She won the People’s Choice award at the Lakewood Cultural Center’s Art Exhibit in 2011 with her painting Shade, shade, give me shade!  Depicting a farm with blue skies, rolling hills and a den of foxes, viewers of the piece commented that it made them feel happy. In 2011 she also officially named her business Wild Hair Artworx…  named after her exuberant and independently minded curly hair. The year of 2012 brought an unexpected change in the form of a series of Sock Monkey paintings.  Mixing her interest in Mid Century design and culture with Sock Monkeys, she developed the Atomic Sock Monkeys and Marlboro Monkey.  This led to a commission of a painting by a community day care facility in Lake City, CO. In this painting, a group of mischievous Sock Monkeys play with the popular toys of the day care in a Baobab tree.

Becky continues to develop paintings driven from sparks of imagination and humor to lift the spirits of viewers. Her Christmas cards are greatly loved and anticipated by friends and family, as are the special cards and paintings made for peoples’ birthdays.

Becky lives in Lakewood, Colorado with her husband, Sean. You can follow her on her Facebook Page at Wild Hair Artworx.
